Position Profile

The Chief of Staff (CoS) will handle special assignments/projects in support of the R&D organization that are related to RDLT and Global R&D meetings, communication, metrics, and decision making.  The CoS may also be responsible for providing direct tactical oversight of key projects as well as handling communications for RDLT and R&D. The person in this role may serve as liaison between key internal stakeholders and external audiences, coordinating a wide range of inter-related activities of both short and long-term duration that may involve sensitive or confidential corporate issues.

Essential Job Functions:

The CoS functions as a key cross functional facilitator who supports the CMO and RDLT, helping to facilitate their ability to accomplish meeting goals and achieve objectives.  Helps to sustain momentum and ensures follow-through from members of the RDLT and other key players.

Specific responsibilities may include

  • RDLT meetings and RDLT off sites – helping to drive meeting agenda/discussion topics, pre-meeting preparation and meeting logistics.  Responsible for tracking action items and in some situations, gathering background information and any relevant history, preparing and providing briefing documents, and/or creating/maintaining any necessary files.  Depending on the type and complexity of the action, issue, or concern, responsibility for resolving/closing-out issue may be delegated to the CoS. 
  • In between meetings, staying connected with members of the RDLT, collecting data, updating the CMO on progress and alerting the CMO to problems.
  • R&D “All Hands” and R&D Global meetings - working to develop meeting agenda topics and drive pre-meeting preparation and oversight of these R&D wide meetings.
  • Serving as an extra set of eyes and ears – keeping the CMO and RDLT aware of potential problems to be addressed and/or opportunities to be considered. Acting as a sounding board to the CMO and members of RDLT, providing insights and observations of interactions, issues, and progress throughout the company.
  • Acting as an ambassador for the CMO, buffering communication or in some cases, representing R&D in discussions where there are sensitive or strategic issues to be addressed or decisions to be made.
  • Preparing responses for basic/routine communication including new hire announcements, organizational changes, and for drafting possibly preliminary reports and/or correspondence that would be considered confidential until finalized.  
  • Assist the CMO in preparation of briefings, presentations, correspondence and speeches.

Essential Requirements:

  • 7 or more years of experience developing, evaluating and/or managing significant programs and/or initiatives.
  • 5 years or more experience working in a management/leadership and/or professional advisory role.
  • Strong business acumen and experience in the life sciences industry.
  • Demonstrated experience in a leadership role.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner to managers and executives.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with internal and external partners.
  • Appropriate expertise in financial modeling and written presentations including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
